Tippett’s Midsummer Marriage, featuring Rachel Nicholls, wins Gramophone Award

The London Philharmonic Orchestra’s recording of Tippett’s The Midsummer Marriage, conducted by Edward Gardner and featuring Rachel Nicholls in the central soprano role of Jenifer, has won the opera category in the 2023 Gramophone Awards. Taken from a live performance in the Royal Festival Hall in September 2021, which was met with the highest critical acclaim, the recording was released on the LPO’s own label in September 2022.

Another LPO recording was shortlisted in the Contemporary category – James MacMillan’s Christmas Oratorio, conducted by Sir Mark Elder and featuring Roderick Williams as baritone soloist
