RPS Opera award goes to Birmingham Opera Company and Graham Vick

The 2019 Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Opera and Music Theatre was presented on November 28 to Birmingham Opera Company for Graham Vick’s thrilling production of Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. The Guardian wrote ‘ BOC’s work remains as sharp and urgent as ever – a power surge feeding into opera’s electricity supply’  and The Times declared that ‘Birmingham Opera Company pulls off a triumph that’s exceptional even by its unique standards.’

It was the BOC’s 50th production and the second time that the company has won this prestigious award, following Stockhausen’s Mittwoch aus Licht in 2013.

Graham Vick’s other projects this year have included Die Tote Stadt at La Scala Milan and Semiramide at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.
