Ryan Wigglesworth to be appointed as Principal Guest Conductor of the Hallé

We are delighted to annouce that Ryan Wigglesworth will be appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Hallé orchestra.  The appointment will take effect in September 2015 and will cover a period of 3 years.

Ryan first worked with the Hallé in 2010, recording a selection of Harrison Birtwistle’s orchestral works for the NMC label, which went on to win the Gramophone Award for Contemporary Record of the Year. His Hallé concert debut was in December 2013, when he replaced an indisposed colleague, conducting Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. This was followed by another concert in February 2014, when Ryan conducted more Berlioz, Britten, Debussy and the world premiere of his revised Violin Concerto.

Before taking up the appointment, Ryan’s immediate plans with the Hallé include a CD of his own works for NMC, to be recorded at Hallé St Peter’s in July. In October this year, Ryan will conduct the Hallé in Sheffield – his home town – in a programme of Schumann, Mozart and Sibelius.

Ryan Wigglesworth said:

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Hallé as Principal Guest Conductor. My first experience of live orchestral music as a child was listening to the Hallé at Sheffield City Hall. In more recent years I’ve followed their astonishing work with Sir Mark with great pleasure and admiration, and I look forward enormously to developing my own relationship with the orchestra over the coming years.”
